Exergamers: ‘Kinecting’ Seniors with Technology at the JCC of Staten Island
Last Thursday, more than 70 Staten Island seniors hit the dance floor to launch the JCC’s new series of health and fitness classes powered by Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox. As part of a partnership with Microsoft, DoITT and DFTA are piloting the exergaming program at the JCC’s Center for Life-Long Development, one of NYC’s innovative senior centers. Attendees experienced their first virtual dance class involving a zumba warm-up and a group dance-off. The interactive gesture-driven game awards stars and points for extra dance moves, creating friendly competition. Inspired by the success the program has had in Los Angeles - the senior community reports improved fitness, well-being, and social life - we’re excited to explore opportunities to extend the program to seniors’ centers across NYC.
